REFUGEES GIVEN MUSIC LESSONS

For individuals who have come from a war torn foreign country such as Iraq and have arrived in the United States as refugees, there are some interesting charitable programs currently at work to help those individuals and their families experience things like music education and for the families who were lucky enough to take part in such lessons, just about everyone who gets to learn an instrument or learns how to read music values it greatly, and this not only includes the children but the parents as well.
The kids who are part of the program often get to take guitar lessons for beginners that only cost a couple of dollars and are funded through a special program that is meant to encourage the involvement of refugees who are staying in the country in the community when they might not know a lot of English and may be struggling to figure out how to integrate their family into the communities so their kids can grow up and enjoy school in the United States.
One particular young teacher who is just out of college has suggested that it would be great to be able to give music lessons to everyone who wants them because of the immense benefits experienced by people who get to learn music. The great thing to about the music lessons that are offered to the refugees is that they often get to pick an instrument that they might never have gotten to access before such as getting to play the piano, learning the guitar or playing the violin.

Thinking about life: Cora Diamond

Cora Diamond has taught and written on Wittgenstein for over thirty years, and her work has exercised a decisive influence on the way Wittgenstein has come to be read by American philosophers.
She has edited Wittgenstein’s “Lectures on the Foundations of Mathematics” and has written over a dozen articles directly concerning Wittgenstein, the earliest of these (“Secondary Sense”) published in 1966 and, more recently, (“How Old Are These Bones?”) in 1999 and (“How Long is the Standard Meter in Paris?”) 2001.
She is widely regarded as one of the leading contemporary scholars of Wittgenstein. But to regard Diamond simply as a scholar of Wittgenstein is to miss the significance of her writings, and to misunderstand the influence of Wittgenstein’s thought in contemporary American philosophy. For what is notable about Diamond’s work is the relative rarity with which she engages in the explication of Wittgenstein’s writings simply for the sake of scholarship. Rather, such explications are closely bound to her arguments about nettlesome problems in contemporary philosophy, even problems, such as animal ethics, of which Wittgenstein seems to have been unaware.
Diamond’s route into professional philosophy bears a strong resemblance to Wittgenstein’s own. Diamond took her undergraduate degree in mathematics, began graduate study in economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and worked as a computer programmer for IBM before going to Oxford to take a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. Wittgenstein worked as an engineer before going to Cambridge to take up philosophy.

Class B Commercial Driver’s License

A Class B commercial driver’s license is issued to those who have undergone CDL training for vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 26, 001 or more pounds. The gross vehicle weight rating may be similar to that which is required in the Class A commercial driver’s license, the main difference lies in the vehicle being towed. A class A CDL requires that the vehicle being towed must not be less than 10, 000 pounds, anything less than that will make it fall under the Class B CDL classification.
The requirements for the issuance of a Class B commercial driver’s license are similar to the other classes of commercial driver’s license. A driver must be physically healthy as may be proven by a medical certificate in order to be eligible for a commercial driver’s license. A series of medical examinations may be required for the applicant to undergo in order to ensure that the applicant does not have any illness or physical disability that would hinder him to do his job with utmost efficiency and diligence.
A physical disability that would hamper efficient driving may disqualify an applicant from getting a commercial driver’s license. Certain illnesses such as high blood, diabetes and heart problems may also render the applicant disqualified. Respiratory illnesses and problem in the sense of sight is also considered as a disqualification.
Vehicles that can be driven by a Class B CDL holder include transport buses and small delivery trucks that carry less than 10, 000 pounds of load or cargo. A holder of Class B CDL is allowed to drive or handle vehicles that are falling under Class C CDL vehicle group.

“Robert Frost: Man and Nature Intertwined” by Phin Upham (Part 6)

The contrast in mood between “There Was a Boy” and “The Most of It” is made self evident in the very first lines of the two poems and this different is indicative of their different views of nature. In “There Was a Boy” Wordsworth addresses the cliffs and islands of Winader in recalling the boy. A gentle intimacy among the three is suggested. The first line of “The Most Of It,” on the other hand, evokes a vastness and solitude by the use of words like “universe” and “alone.” Each poem sustains and gradually intensifies the mood established at the very beginning. Wordsworth proceeds to describe, in blank verse, the young boy who, making an instrument of his fingers calls out to a responsive world around him. They are all one – the poet, the boy, the cliffs, the vales and the hootings. And the poem is gentle as well as responsive. Even the word “shock” in the nineteenth line is flanked by the mollifying adjectives “gentle” and “mild.” There is nothing harsh about this world, just occasionally a sweet and joyous wildness as the orchestra of sounds rings out – “the quivering peals,” “the long halloos,” the “screams” and the “echoes” which “redouble and redouble.” Then the crescendo of sounds suddenly ceases and there is a moment of exquisite stillness during which the visual impact of the scene peaks.

What To Bring On Fishing Trips

There are a number of things that we are able to do now that the weather has finally warmed up and the kids are almost out of school. This is the time of the year when we are able to grab hold of our fishing gear and go out and try to catch some dinner. Just make sure that you have all of the right supplies.

If you are like me than things can sometimes be a little too quiet. Try to bring along your iPod or small portable radio. This will provide the kids with something to listen to.
The last thing that you will need to have on the list is the first aid kit. In this kit you want to make sure to have bottle of sun tan lotion, band aids, and things for bug bites. You never know what to expect out in the wild of nature and it helps to be prepared for almost anything that might happen.

To Thine Own Self Be True: Self Concept and Self Identity (Part 2)

One of the major flaws of James’s work is its apparent lack of cross-cultural awareness shown in the early half which deals with self-identity and concept. James lived in the US (though he often traveled to England where his brother spent much time as well) during a very individualistic and optimistic time and bought into the American world-view. The usefulness of empirical works, limited in scope, that I discussed brifly earlier is brought to the forefront in Markus and Kitayama’s brilliant work on Japanese and US differences in self-identity. Through linguistic, aphoristic, quantitative, structural, and empirical means they show how the US and Japanese constructions of self and others are fundamentally different. In the US they found an individualistic and self-related self identity which sharply contrasted with the Japanese more close-knit, others related, shame-based society where harmonious relationships with others was highly valued. Rather than the US being the norm in its individualistic concept of self-identity, it is the outlier (from a global perspective).
Other pieces are illuminating in their attempts to mail down aspects of self identity and build a framework which can account for its complexity and adaptability. Brewer’s piece on the Social Self, for example, provides a very interesting guide as to what sorts of groups one will use as the basis for self-identity. She hypothesizes that people are functionalistic in their choice of social identification, that they wish to differentiate themselves while at the same time provide a sense of belonging. Her work is provides a model that is both empirical and analytical. Ashforth and Mael provide us with a Social Identity Theory that attempts to describe what may help an individual to partially define him/herself through an organization (to a greater or lesser extent). Features that help buffer, reinforce, and self-identify an individual within an organization are discussed.
Taifel and Turner’s piece on inter-group behavior can be seen as almost building, on the meso level, on the previous two articles mentioned. Once someone identifies themselves with a set of groups (especially with one group, or one group given some relevant context) how does this affect his/her relationship and interrelationship with members of other groups? How does group identity and group prestige and dominance positively and negatively affect members of a minority or a majority? If people identify themselves (voluntarily or non-voluntarily) with a group and that group has certain social characteristics (prestige, power, dominance, etc) what happens to that person in terms of real, measured consequences? How does this self-identity change over time or cross-culturally? Lastly, Leon Festinger’s A Theory of Social Comparison Processes builds on the microscopic level a model which looks, in many ways, like Taifel and Turner’s does on the meso-level. Festinger explores how an individual uses a group to build up and change his/her identity and how a group in turn treats the ideas and contributions of an individuals. If, for example, an individual is able to easily observe and compare himself to a group along a certain metric, and he is in the middle range of this comparison, he will have a more stable and stronger view of the metric. By building up this level of analysis, Festinger is lending a view into how being a member of a group can act as a feedback to modify ones views. So one chooses a group to identify with for certain reasons, this group affects one’s views, one in turn influences this group’s positions, and so on. It is a dynamic and never-ending process of equilibrium and disequilibrium.
