Digital signatures have the capability of changing the face of business. There many gains to be made in terms of productivity and security by switching to workflow enabled a digital signatures. The technology is all easily available and is relatively inexpensive. Most of the common programs people use every day support digital signatures if they were only set up correctly.
The barriers to Digital signatures being adopted a peer to meet more cultural than technical. There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding of what digital signatures offer. Most people don’t understand how they work and so it’s easier to just avoid them. However, the benefits are so great that there needs to be more effort put into educating people on how their business and work processes can be improved using this technology. At this point the only entities that seem to have an interest in doing this education or companies that sell digital certificates, but there may be value in eventually establish a nonprofit corporation to really push the usage of this technology.
Another barrier to adoption is the fax machine problem. The first person to buy a fax machine didn’t find it very useful. It was only when other people had the machine is started being useful. Based on that it’s amazing the fax machine is ever able to be sold. Until everyone had one there was no reason to have one, but if there was no reason to have unknowingly buy one in the first place. In this case digital signatures are quite a bit less expensive than early fax machines, however there is a mental hurdle — understanding the process seems to be difficult for a large number of people.
