Learning to Speak Another Language

July 4th, 2010 by admin

If you’ve ever had the desire to learn a language, it is not too late.  While the best time to learn to speak another language is when you are a child, most adults are capable of learning to speak fluently with hard work and determination.  One option for learning a language is to take courses at a school.  Another option is to purchase a language teaching program for your computer.  A third option is completely self-taught, using books and different websites, as well as Cd’s and tapes.  No matter which option you choose, it will be hard work, but it can be done.

One of the keys of how to learn a language is to never take an extended break from your studies.  You should practice every day, even if it is for as little as a half an hour.  Taking an extended break will interrupt the flow of knowledge that your brain is trying to create in the new language.  one advantage to using Cd’s and books, is that you can take them with you on vacation or your commute to work.  This allows you to continuously expose yourself to the language, which is essential for learning it.  If you do find that you need to take a break for longer than a day, you can review your previous work when you return to your lessons.  Do not skip reviewing your previous lessons, as they will refresh your memory and reinforce what you have learned already.

Many adults may wonder, how long does it take to learn a language?  Learning to speak a new language can be done in under a year with daily work and practice.  For others it may take longer.  Another key component to learning to speak a language fluently is practicing what you have learned.  One way of practicing your new language is to read newspapers printed in that language.  With cable and radio stations broadcasting in many languages across the US, you can also listen to improve your ability to understand when someone else speaks in the language.  It is not enough to just memorize the words without learning to use them in context.  Immersing yourself in the language is one of the best ways to thoroughly learn to speak in that language.
