Microsoft Excel Tutorial Part Nine: Using Autofill

July 15th, 2010 by admin

Welcome to another session of our Microsoft Excel Tutorial.  There will be a slight change in topics today. Due to the overwhelming amount of mail that I have received regarding Autofill function in Excel, we will be covering that function today.  This week’s original topic: “how do i identify and eliminate duplicates in excel?”, will be discussed next week.  Before we begin, always remember everything we discussed can be found in the archive section of our site.  All your questions can be answered there. Take the time to read it for reference.

So, how do i autofill in excel?

First you select a cell then type either a number, a day of the week , a month of the year or any value that has an ascending or descending order.  After typing the value, drag that small black square found on the bottom right part of your selected cell to any new cell of your choice.  When you do this, you will see all cell it passes by being autofilled .  Just take note, that you can only autofill via dragging left or right and top to bottom.   You cannot drag cells diagonally and use autofill.  Also, If you autofill from left to right and top to bottom, the values will be in ascending order.  If you use autofill bottom to top or right to left, the values will be in descending order.

That is all the time we have for today.  I hope you all have learned something valuable in this lesson.  Always remember to keep on practicing and do not forget to visit our lesson archives for your guide and reference.
