Other Graduate Study Program

Most individuals are familiar with a Masters degree. Likewise, the majority of the population understands what a doctorate is. However there are a number of other graduate recognition programs that are often overlooked. In this article we will examine two of those.

Many graduate schools offer some type of certificate program. These are graduate level classes that are often part of a master’s degree program. A certificate program allows the student to earn recognition for advanced study without a full-time commitment of a Masters degree. In many cases the certificate program is highly focused on a specific topic. These programs can be very advantageous for people wanting to expand their career into a related field that requires specialized study.

In some situations a certificate program can be a stepping stone toward a master’s degree. Often it is a great way for someone to expand on their Masters degree foundation and study other related areas without pursuing a new master’s degree or a full doctor a program.

There is another academic program referred to as a citation. This is similar to a certificate program but on a much smaller scale. Where a certificate program may require 25 to 35 credit hours to obtain. A citation program may only require 10 to 20 credit hours.

Once again a citation allows an individual to add significant value to their resume without the full commitment of an advanced degree. It allows an individual to specialize in an area beyond what they may be able to do with a full graduate degree.

Another often overlooked advantage of certificates and citations is the ability to reference a well known and reputable academic institution on your resume. Even if you went to a run-of-the-mill state school, a certificate or citation from an Ivy League school could give you a significant edge in the job market.

In addition employers are often impressed with people who have demonstrated continual effort toward education. A certificate or citation looks better than simply mentioning that you took a few classes. It allows you to show a degree of proficiency in a specialized area of study much more effectively than trying to list out the classes you took to try to improve your knowledge.

Many schools offer online options that will allow you to study toward your certificate or citation. This opens up a whole new world of opportunity for continual education.
