What to do when studying in Boston
August 13th, 2010 by admin
Going to USA this fall, maybe to study at an English school in Boston?
The city of Boston has more than three million inhabitants and is the unofficial capital of New England, the area north of New York. As the name suggests, it was here that some of the first English colonists in the U.S. settled, and it was here that the urge to secede from the British was ignited. Boston is a city with an exciting mix of historic traditions, modern high-tech and liberal attitudes. When walking around in Boston, you can either start from Chinatown Park in the south end of the city or the North End Park in the north end.
Boston’s historical background Some of the first English settlers from Europe went ashore from the famous ship Mayflower in 1620 just south of Boston. They were quickly followed by more, and soon the area was colonized by the English. The official England came, however, soon at odds with the settlers – not least because of unpopular British tax. In 1770 five Americans were killed during a demonstration in Boston, known as the Boston Massacre. And in 1773 a group of Americans – disguised as Indians – climbed aboard a British merchant ship in Boston, and threw the cargo of tea overboard. It was the beginning of the War of Independence between Englishmen and Americans, who in 1776 led to the declaration of independence and the formation of the United States. The Freedom Trail You can experience the many historic events in Boston in a five km long walking tour of the city called the Freedom Trail. As you follow a red stripe on the pavement, you will pass 16 locations in Boston, which all relate to Americans’ struggle for independence. These include the site of the Boston Massacre in 1773 and the warship USS Constitution from 1812 war against the English.
