What’s Involved In Dental Assistant Duties

If you have ever wondered what dental assistant duties involve then we will enlighten you! It can be a varied and fulfilling role, particularly if you like working closely with other people, are not squeamish and like dealing with the general public.

Some of whom are likely to be scared as some people are when going to the dentist or when they are in pain they may not be as friendly as normal! A dental assistant is sometimes also called a dental nurse and they essentially assist the dentist in their daily work.

They may greet the patient upon coming into the surgery and get them settled in the dentists chair ready for their check up or procedure. Once the dentist is working they will listen to what the dentist is saying and if it is a check up they will take down notes on the health of their teeth as it is said out loud.

One part of their job is to assist the dentist by using the suction whilst the dentist is working. The dental assistant can also help the dental hygienist during their work.

If a procedure is done then the assistant will pass instruments to the dentist and help him when he works in the mouth. It is also part of their job to keep the patient relaxed and happy.

They may also be asked to take x-rays of the mouth that the dentist needs. Part of their job may also involve rotating to the reception desk on occasion and book appointments and see people when they first come in.

They will also be required to keep the patients notes and files up to date and in an appropriate filing system. Whilst these jobs may seem small compared to the job of the dentist or hygienist, without the role of the dental assistant the dental surgery would not run as well or it may even be impossible!
